Ahead of the herd rode the trail boss, searching for the best route, grass, water, river crossings, and campsites. Next came two point riders, who guided the lead steers, old and experienced animals trusted by the rest of the herd . . . About a third of the way back from the point riders, a pair of swing riders rode on either side of the herd. They zigzagged back and forth, keeping cattle from straying from the herd. About two thirds of the way toward the rear rode two flank riders with similar duties.
